Oestrogel 60 mg is gel for cutaneous application containing 60 mg of Estradiol used in estrogen hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to substitute the lack of oestrogen production by the ovaries. It is used to relieve symptoms of menopause caused by oestrogen deficiency, such as hot flushes, excessive sweating, sleeplessness, vaginal dryness, headaches, mood swings, lack of concentration and loss of energy. Oestrogel is also used as prevention of postmenopausal bone loss (osteoporosis) and reduce risk of fracture. Oestrogel stimulates the development of female sexual characteristics, and is used as the oestrogen component of transgender hormone therapy for male to female transsexuals.
Oestrogel contains the active ingredient estradiol valerate, exactly 17 beta-estradiol, the major and most active form of oestrogen produced by the ovaries, and is used for hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Oestrogel can be used as part of a gender reassignment program for male to female transsexuals, by providing a source of estradiol, the most active form of the female hormone oestrogen. Oestrogel stimulate the development of female secondary sexual characteristics, such as breast development and also induce metabolic changes such as fat distribution to redefine the general body shape.
Indications: oestrogen hormon replacement therapy
Side effects: the most frequently reported side effects when using Oestrogel are breast tenderness, breast pain, abdominal pain, nausea, oedema, and headache, skin rash and itching, insomnia and depression.
Health risks: long-term HRT with Oestrogel does have associated health risks, including an increased risk of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, stroke and deep vein thrombosis.
Contraindications: you should not use Oestrogel if you:
- are allergic to oestradiol valerate or any ingredients in Oestrogel
- have a past or family history of carcinoma of the breast, endometrial carcinoma or liver disease
- have deep venous thrombosis, thromboembolic disorders, cerebral vascular accident associated with oestrogen use
- have abnormal genital bleeding of unknown cause
- are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- are taking other medications that may interact with Oestrogel, such as anticonvulsants like phenytoin and carbamazepin, barbiturates, anti-infectives like rifampicin, rifabutin, nevirapine, antibiotics like penicillin,.
- have hypersensitivity to any component of the gel
- have certain cardiac diseases
- have recent inflamation of vein with formation of the blood clot or recent obliteration of a pulmonary vessel.
Use and dosage: the average dose is one ruler per day, for 24 to 28 days every month. The application is made over a wide area of clean skin (arms, upper part of the buttocks, lower part of the abdomen, the lumbar region, uppr par of the thights etc.). The gel should not be applied over the breast or mucous membranes. It is not necessary to massage the product into the sking. The gel does not stain. The application may be made at any time, in the morning or in the evening.
Length of treatment: the duration of the treatment is from between 24 to 28 days per month. It may be modified by your doctor. You should use Oestrogel for as long as your doctor recommends.
Overdosage: the effects of overdosage are usually a sensation or tension in the breast, swelling of the abdomen, anxiety, irritability. Those signs disappear when the treatment is stopped or when the dose is reduced. Consult your doctor if such symptomps appear during the treatment.
Forgotten dosage:
Do not take a double dose to make up for forgotten individual doses. Start the treatment again at the originaly prescribed dose.
Storage:
Keep out of the reach and sight of children. There are no special storage instructions.
